How To Put Together A Winning Grad School Application Package for Admissions to Psychology Programs
Although the requirements vary from program to program, there are a few basic elements of an application package to graduate school. Nowadays, many universities are opting to use electronic applications. You can simply download, fill in necessary information, and submit your application fee with the push of a button. Easy and convenient for all.
The second element is the personal statement. Many people say that this is the hardest part of the application package to put 
together. However, the personal statement is where you can showcase your writing skills and advocate for yourself in a way that your grades and test scores cannot. Among other things, you want to discuss why you’re interested in graduate study, outline your research interests, identify a faculty mentor, and – the fun part – pose a compelling argument that answers the question: (1) Why me? and (2) Why this graduate program? Make no mistake – if writing is not your strong suit or you just need a little direction, it is a good idea to consult a guide, or better yet, spring for a professional review.
Next is the task of chasing down professors for letters of recommendation! Usually, you want to have recommenders who are familiar with you personally and professionally. It’s not enough to ask the professor who you got an A in his/her class. He/She may be agree to write one for you, but it’s likely to be very nonspecific and blah in a way that doesn’t pose the “Wow, this is the greatest student ever!” factor.
Official transcripts and GRE Scores are pretty much standard. As far as the GRE, you want to be organized in keeping track of specific requirements from program to program. Some universities will require both GRE General and Psychology scores. Others will just want your GRE General Score. If you did well on the GRE Psychology, it doesn’t hurt to send those scores, but it is an absolute no-no if you fail to submit GRE Psychology scores when requested. Automatic banishment to the rejection pile.
Lastly, you may want to include a resume as part of the essential application package. Much like if you were applying for a job, list your scholastic and extracurricular activities. Independent study, honors theses, or study abroad is much more applicable than highlighting the fact that you play the acoustic guitar. While interesting (maybe, depending on whose reading), activities of this variety are definitely nonessential.
