Top Ranked Ph.D. Program in Psychology Profile: Duke University

Duke University has a very honorable position, not just for psychology graduate programs, but for nearly every other department on campus! Definitely then, getting an admission for its top ranked PhD program in psychology could be a great privilege. However, being the big name that it is, it isn’t all that simple to secure an acceptance letter. You need to have a great deal of planning and preparation to successfully pass through the graduate admission process. It isn’t as simple as good grades or GRE scores. There are five areas of psychology in which you can receive your Ph.D. in psychology from Duke University:

  • Clinical Psychology
  • Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Systems and Integrative Neuroscience
  • Social Psychology

All these areas are different, and it is very important that you do some self-introspection and decide well in advance where you major of interest lies. Think back to your coursework. Were you captivated by some of the themes you talked about in Social Psychology? Are you interested in how children learn language? What about autism? Those interests should guide which Ph.D. program you should apply to.

The best place to introduce your research interests is within your statement of purpose (also called the personal statement). You will want to outline why you’re interested in receiving a Ph.D. in this area of psychology as well as why Duke University is your ideal university. If you have prior research experience, which is swiftly becoming a requirement to get into graduate programs in the first place, you will want to mention it in your personal statement.

From a broad point of view, the admission process to the Duke University is quite strict. The GPA score is carefully scrutinized and if your GPA score is anywhere below 3.5, you may not be competitive for admissions to the doctoral program. Currently, the GRE score requirement is above 1200, and so the bulk of students who apply to this top psychology graduate school have a GRE exam score of between 1200 and 1600.

However, it is not just the academic qualifications that are needed to please the admission committee. One more factor is at play when the admission authorities shortlist applicants. They try to find out applicants who have a potential becoming compatible with a particular member of the faculty. This is because the university believes in the principle of mentorship and hence they see if they have some compatible ‘mentor’ within their ranks or not. If you have not already done your research by selecting an appropriate mentor, then chances are that you will not get into one of Duke’s Ph.D. programs. For this reason alone, many applicants choose to reach out and establish contact with potential faculty mentors through campus visits or email contact before they even begin drafting out their grad school applications.
